“How much?” The automaton looked up at the source of the large shadow looming over her. “Excuse me?” “What’s the purse?” The grey robot cracked his knuckles. “I want in.” “Amateur prize is $300,” she answered flatly, worrying at her nails with a piece of steel wool. “I’m not interested in the amateur prize,” he responded, taking a drag from his cigarette. “I’m here for the top prize.” “Robot Rumble rules clearly state that a competitor must be victorious in a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 amateur bouts before consideration for the professional level competition,” she rattled off without taking her eyes off of her nail polishing. “Sorry,” she said unapologetically. The grey robot tipped back the brim of his wide hat. “What’s your name sweetheart?” The receptionist looked up at him with an unimpressed look. “None of your business.” “Well, None of Your Business, do your rules say I have to win 3 bouts or I have to defeat 3 opponents?” He ran his hands along the straps of his blue overalls. The question gave the redhead pause, but he didn’t wait for her answer. “How about this, Business. I take on 5 of your amateurs, all at the same time, and I get bumped straight up to compete with the big boys where I belong,” he said with a smile. “It’s your funeral,” she said with a shrug. “Name?” “Harvester,” he said as he straightened his bolo tie, looking over the amateur entries spread across her desk. “And I reckon this field is ripe.” To be continued… ![]() |
